Excellent book - highly recommended! May 12, 2009 laurie bird 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This book is absolutely awesome. It's so well organized and the screenshots make it very easy to follow along. It walks you through a total end to end workflow in photoshop and lightroom (which I love) from understanding exposure, setting up the workspace in photoshop, b/w conversion steps and even printing! It's also filled with beautiful, inspiring images. Once you understand the basic concepts, you can be so much more creative with your photos...it's helped me turn ordinary images into something classic (everything looks better in black and white!). I seriously recommend this book for anyone trying to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to create stunning black and white images. Kudos to the authors for demystifying the process.
Great Redaing for B&W digital artist September 8, 2009 John W. Galbreath (Libertyville, IL USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is easy reading and well designed. I have used techniques as written and gotten excellent results. It is one of the best, if not the best, book on digital B&W conversion.
The Best Book On Digital Photography That I Have Read October 25, 2009 Thomas A. Bethune 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is about the fifth book on using Photoshop that I have ordered in the past year, and I think it is the best by far. This book is about black and white photography, but the authors do such a great job on explaining how digital photography works that I believe any serious photographer would benefit from reading this great book.

For some time my ability with digital to black and white has been suffering. I had seen many examples of black and white digital shots that wowed me and this made me yearn to expand my abilities with black and white conversion.
This was the book I chose. I usually go down to Borders and browse the many titles. Later I will think about the books and most often come shopping on Amazon to make my final purchase to save money.
This time was different. I spent about 15 minutes looking at this book and a few others and I knew I wanted it enough to where I put down the extra 12 buck and walked out of the store.
I was not and have not been disappointed. My black and white pictures were immediately improved. And although I originally bought this to use with Photoshop I was pleasantly surprised as how well it works with Lightroom as well.
It is laid out an sections that work together and separately and there are many examples on varying manners in which to achieve different results.
Most informative and useful book I have found December 12, 2009 P. Rice (Lamy, New Mexico) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am very interested in using Photoshop for creating Black and White images for digital printing.
The source of the images are from a digital camera as well as large format negatives which have been carefully scanned
I am familiar with traditional darkroom techniques but needed information on using Photoshop to produce effects like dodging, burning, contrast adjustment, filtering, large sky burns or edge burns etc.
I also hoped to become more familiar with non destructive PS techniques such as layers masking and selections
Every book I purchased (and there are far to many) provided information not related to my interest despite the titles.
The authors of Black and White in Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom go directly to the heart of the matter as defined in the title. The book proved useful immediately.
There is a step by step approach which is never boring and always instructive
The critical areas of scanning, capture and adjustments from color to B&W are brilliantly covered
I recommend this book to anyone who is captivated by the Title
The book will not disappoint
