Excellent Book: Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro X3 For Photographers July 25, 2010 Sarwat Ezzeldin (Irvine, CA, United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book should be useful to anyone who wants to get more from their digital photos and have basic knowledge of how to use a PC. It is an essential addition to the Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro X3 for those who want to do more than just the basic editing to their digital photos. The book takes a practical, clear and well organized approach to demonstrate tools and techniques available in PSPP X3 to do the things you want with your digital photos. It also has some great and very helpful tips on removing scratched and blemishes from scans, I have a load of very old prints that need to be scanned and restored, this will be very useful.
The book starts with the basics, an introduction: Basic Tools, Toolbars, explanation of PSPP Features, Basic Editing. And gradually go to the more advanced editing techniques such as Combining Images - Layers and Masks, Histograms, etc.
Each chapter is concluded with step-by-step projects to apply the editing techniques acquired in that chapter and sharpen these skills.
This is a very good book; well organized, easy to follow, with lots of illustrations. Excellent printing quality on high quality paper, well worth the money.
COVERS EVERYTHING FOR YOUR PHOTOS & DIGITAL IMAGES! August 15, 2010 Tante Maren (Ohio, United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I spent over half a decade exchanging ancient photos with many family members and then fixing them up on my computer, when I was doing our family's history. The photos were exchanged by copies in the mail and also over the internet, so the poor qualities from copies and emails needed a lot of professional help! I have an array of photo programs- not just PaintShop Photo Pro, but I also use Microsoft Digital Image Pro, Adobe Photoshop Elements, ArcSoft Photo Printer Pro and some less known other programs. I can tell you first hand that this book will help you with ALL your photo programs that have many of the PaintShop Photo Pro features. This book is absolutely invaluable as I have already used half of the features, so I know the directions in this book are easy to understand and put into use, and I learned about the other half that I didn't know how to use. The directions are organized and simple, and with the great illustrated photos on almost every page, you'll find you can easily do anything with your photos.
The things I already knew about were first buying a great scanner and inkjet printer. I own an Epson Perfection Scanner and an HP Photosmart Printer. The scanner really is perfection and the printer makes photos that are absolutely color rich and perfect! One thing that the book does not mention is inkjet ink. Inkjet ink is the best for photos, but if a drop of moisture or water hits the ink- it runs. This is not a problem if you never get moisture near your photos, but I keep my photos on a disc to have them forever, so I could make a new copy if water damage should ever happen. There is also a photo protection spray that is like a spray polymer that protects an important photo from running. This can be bought in any art store and is good for a photo that you want to keep sealed and protected forever. Once you have a good photo program, good brand of photo paper, scanner and printer, you are ready to make gorgeous photos on your computer, and with the help from this book and practice- very quickly.
The programs I had already used in this book are the following:
Clone and Blending Brushes- the best for repairing damaged photos with bends, cracks or stains. Straightening a photo. Cropping a photo. Merging Photos. Printing Multiple Photos. Editing. Brightening. Color Balance and Saturation. Hues. Backlighting. Fill Flash. Tinting. Color Changing tools. Red Eye tool. Image Resolution. Sharpen tool. Sun Tan Brush. Hand coloring. Greeting Cards. These programs all take practice and the results are beyond fabulous! In one photo I was working on from 1890, almost half of the woman's face was missing, but with the clone tool and blending tool I replaced her missing eye and cheekbone and you would never know it was ever fixed!
The programs I have never used or didn't really know what the applications were for in this book are the following:
Watermarking an image to protect your copyright from theft. Layer Styles- Reflection, Outerglow, Bevel, Emboss, Innerglow, Drop shadow. Skin smoothing removes wrinkles and blemishes. Time Machine makes a photo look aged. Removing Scratches or Blemishes from Scans. Creating Black and white Photos- it's actually easier to shoot in black and white. Warp Tool. Scripting. Object Cut Out. Layers- like a sheet of clear acetate containing pixels or vector data (like for adding a shadow to a form). Mask Layer- like a stencil. Vector Graphics- text and shapes. Pen Tool- make your own shape, like those clouds you make for thinking or speaking in a photo. Many Brush Tools- even one so fine you can put dew drops on a rose. Many Filters- Even one corrects distortions like when a narrow hallway is bowed in- you can make it straight!
This book is truly fabulous with a wealth of complete information for doing absolutely anything with your photos and I now know how to use the other half of my Photo Programs that I wasn't sure what all the Tools were for. The best part of this 5 Star book is it works for my other Photo Programs that have these exact same features!

I already own the PaintShop Photo Pro X2 Ultimate Edition Program. Unlike many other reviewers, I was thrilled with it. I never got so much value in a computer program for so little money. Really!
Look, I'm just an amateur photographer and local photography club member - aspiring to maybe make a few bucks taking pictures. I own a Canon Rebel EOS XSi. Only 13 Megapixels and five decent lenses. So weigh my opinions against my qualifications.
"PhotoShop Photo Pro X3 for Photographers" is useful for learning even X2 as well as the X3 update. For me, it has inspired me to purchase the X3 Program.
I'm not going to detail or rate these new photographic controls. Read the description above.
If you are thinking of purchasing a Photo Editor read this book first. You will find that "PaintShop Photo Pro X3 for Photographers" is a viable substitute for Adobe's "PhotoShop," at least for most amateur photographers. Actually, most amateur photographers might be satisfied with "Picasa," a free download from [...]
If you are rich and/or a successful photographer, then go ahead and spend all that money for everything Adobe has to offer. Coral has a long way to beat Adobe. None the less, I give Coral FIVE STARS for producing a viable alternative at a sensible price. It is so much better than Google's "Picasa" that it isn't worth the comparison. I also give FIVE STARS to this book because it really simplifies using this program and it also reaches back to include the earlier version. Beyond all that, this book will give the reader insight into photo editing in general. Please read this book before you purchase a Photo Editor.
If I have been helpful, say so.
Great guide August 4, 2010 Bunson Honeydew (White Plains, NY) I have the basic spiral bound evaluators guide that came with the software. This how-to manual is far more robust. The software is fairly easy to manipulate and edit photos. This manual allows the user to take things to the next level. It far more useful than the "Dummies" series of guides.
Excellent Review of PaintShop Photo Pro X3 August 8, 2010 W. DEMEDIO (Oz) I gave this book to a relative who is a professional graphic artist and does Digital Image Processing for a living. She said it would be an excellent book for anyone that uses the PaintShop Pro X3 program. All salient features and shortcuts for the program are covered and it makes an excellent reference book. She works professionally with a national photography studio and is an indepent contractor so I will assume the veracity of her assessment. Therefore I very strongly, and without reservations recommend this book to anyone who uses or is thinking of buying PaintShop Pro X3.
