Amazon Exclusive: Photography Tips and Techniques from Harold Davis How to Use Shadows to Enhance Your Composition | How to Use LAB Color for Black and White Effects | Professional Photography Techniques from Harold Davis | Amazon Exclusive: Interview with Award-Winning Photographer Harold Davis We hear you’ve written some new digital photography titles. What’s the story behind these books? Wiley Publishing is releasing three new books of mine, Creative Close-Ups: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques , Creative Night: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques , and Creative Composition: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques . My idea with these books was to help people become better photographers by presenting the subject of digital photography in a different way. What’s different about your approach? They say that cameras don’t take photos, people do. It’s really true. Someone with a great eye can take masterful photos with an inexpensive camera. Therefore, it is important to know something about photo technique, but the really amazing thing is that we can conceptualize and come up with these bits and bytes that make up a photo—and they can be meaningful to people. I try to help people come up with images that are relevant and meaningful. Cameras and hardware are just tools. What’s with all the photos in these books? Well, everyone likes to look at striking images, so one thing my photos do in these books is get people’s attention. However, the photos play another role as well. Each photo in my book is accompanied by the story of how the photo was made and the technical data related to the photo. That way, if you’re not ready to dive into the text itself, you can learn a lot just by browsing the photos. My feeling is that you truly do learn about photography by looking at photos. It’s much more important to look at images you admire and try and figure out why you like them than it is to read about photography. The photos in these books are baked into the DNA of the teaching strategy. By browsing through the pages, someone can learn a great deal and have an enjoyable visual experience at the same time. What’s the most important thing that readers can get out of your new books? I want to inspire readers to be the most creative and best photographers they can be. If you pick up one of my books, I hope you can make use of the technical content and see how the photos relate to some of your own work. The most important thing, however, is to take the ideas in the book, get out there, and do some really peddle-to-the-metal creative photography.

Phantasmagorical! November 20, 2009 Jack H. Tasoff (San Pedro, CA) 27 out of 31 found this review helpful
With "Creative Night: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques," Mr. Davis creates a new paradigm in photography, the universe of photographing the night. I do not mean photographing at night, but photographing the night. I mean photographing the night that so often has its exquisite beauty concealed in the details that only photography can expose.
His photographs are like an Escher, dazzling to both the eye and mind.
This is not an absolute beginner's book. You need to know what aperture, shutter speed, and ISO mean. But from there Mr. Davis takes you by the hand and gently guides you through a discipline little understood by amateur or professional alike. The photographs are exquisite. The book will surely find its place on your coffee table. Each photograph is accompanied by short explanation of how it was conceived and created. The text is concise, easy to understand, and without the frivolities that that I so often find irksome in some techniques books. That is not to say it is dry or boring. With each photograph I just WANTED to know how it was done. Unlike a mystery novel, I did not want to know who did it, but rather "how" did it. I suggest that on each page you first look at the photograph, and then "guess" how it was done. So often I was never even close to right answer.
My recommendation is to place the book on your wish list, or even better, buy the it now. It is a pearl of great worth.
Great book! November 26, 2009 Suprada (Saratoga, CA) 19 out of 23 found this review helpful
Creative Night is a great book with brilliant photographs. Night photography is one of those sidelines of photography which doesn't get much exposure. However, Harold has changed all that.
Do you want to know what on earth you can photograph at night? Do you want to know how to photograph at night?
Harold Davis has some suggestions of subjects with great photography providing samples of those subjects. Just looking at the photographs in the book can get your creative juices flowing. There are suggestions for those who feel at home in the wilderness as well as to those who thrive in the city. Harold Davis also provides starting points to start taking photos at night. You do need to know the basic technical aspects of photography - What aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure are, and what these mean. With that knowledge, and with the suggestions and the settings tips in this book, you can go shooting at night and come back with some really nice night photographs.
In this book, Harold also has information on a lot of other aspects of night photography - safety issues, tips about the right equipment, and about what else makes night photography exciting. And to top that, he discusses some post processing techniques - blending, selective noise processing, stacking.
I spent an evening just looking through his exquisite photographs. Each of these come with side stories and technical details, all the better for savoring them with a glass of wine. The great part about the book is that it is an easy read. The text is interesting and doesn't get lost in technical jargon. The information is clearly and concisely presented and you come away knowing a lot more than when you began.
Overall, this is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it to everyone who is interested in night photography. It would make an awesome gift to somebody who is excited with the idea of night photography. And it makes a good coffee table book as well.
great instruction, enjoyable reading! December 18, 2009 Patricia M. Sweeney (NYC, NY) 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
Being an obsessed photographer as I am, I read many books on the subject. I picked this up and honestly, I read it through to the last page. Harold Davis is an engaging writer as well as a terrific photographer. His stories accompanying the practical information made the book personable and enjoyable. His clear and concise instruction on every aspect of night shooting is invaluable. I wish I could have this book in cliff notes to bring with me on shoots!
Especially helpful for me was his stacking chapters. This is all new to me, and I completely understand it now. It was the most thorough instruction on the subject I have ever seen.
All in all, I highly recommend this book. It's easy enough for beginners and filled with new information for even for the most experienced photographers. Thank you Harold!!

Nice Guide to Night Photography December 14, 2009 Jeff R. Clow (Corinth, TX United States) 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
Although I have been an experienced photographer for several years, night photography has always been a stretch for me. That is - until I read this book.
I was looking for something that was easy to read and not overly complex, and that told me HOW to make better photos at night. Author Harold Davis has done that exact thing very well in this book that is equal parts instruction manual and inspiration central for the would be night photographer. His tips and techniques for getting the most out of a scene at night really resonated with me because his writing style is so straightforward and so very easy to understand.
When you can read a book that prompts you to pick up your camera and head immediately outside to try one of the author's suggestions, then I think that act alone says the book is a winner.
Highly recommended for anyone who has tired of trying to take night photos without professional help. Night photography can be hard....this book makes it so much easier.
