Amazon.com Review Book Description Behind National Geographic’s worldwide reputation as a powerhouse of photography lies one of the finest, most extensive, and most unique graphic resources on Earth: the National Geographic Image Collection. For the first time ever, readers will plumb the fascinating depths of this immense archive from the earliest photographs collected in the late 19th century to the cutting-edge work of today. Both iconic and never-before-seen images from virtually every corner of the globe, every species of wildlife, and amazing human achievements in exploration, adventure, science, and more are showcased and placed in historic, artistic, technical, and journalistic context.
Following this lavish visual journey, readers will be awed by a behind-the-scenes profile of the entire collection, its size, its richly diverse character, and its special collections, ranging from delicate and beautiful Autochromes to the famous Alexander Graham Bell collection to the amazing stratosphere collection. Fine artwork and imaginative illustrations are also featured.
Finally, a listing of photographers whose work is represented stands as a fitting tribute to those without whose tireless and brilliant efforts the Collection would not exist. The gift book for all photographers. November 30, 2009 Shrutte farm beets (DC) 28 out of 29 found this review helpful
I spent the weekend reviewing the images in this book. What a treat it was. It's not just another collection of the same images we have come to see again and again.
The book delves deep into to the archives of the National Geographic society to find images that represent all aspects of their collection. What a great variety of images, photographers and styles, all held together and presented in this beautiful book.
It's hard to say what I liked best, there is just so much to choose from, Old B&W, autochrome plates and both 35 mm and digital photography. Such beautiful Images -and not the ones that are published over and over. they took me into what it must be like to work there, behind the scenes.
If you know anyone who loves photography this is the gift to buy them this holiday season
Wonderful Gift Idea! December 7, 2009 Robin W. (Carp Lake, MI USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this book as a Christmas gift for a colleague and couldn't be more delighted. In fact, I enjoyed browsing its pages before I wrapped it so much, I'm going to order a copy for my own bookshelves. It's definitely a keeper!
Simply Beautiful December 4, 2009 Mambs 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book contains such a broad range of photographs from all over the world. Each page is a reminder of the incredible richness of the human and natural world. I do not know much about photography, but it's amazing to see how both the quality and the style of photographs has evolved over the past century. This is a truly enduring book that I will enjoy for years to come.
Great Pictures January 7, 2010 James H. Williams (Evanston, Wyoming) As you would expect from National Geographic, great photographs. This is a very nice collection. The price is pretty reasonable too.
